Question about upgrading steering wheel to Sport Design wheel

Hello,

I've been lurking for a few months and finally ready to pull the trigger on a new to me Cayman. I am having trouble finding a car with the right options/color/price. I will be getting a PDK and one of my absolute must haves is the Sport Design Steering wheel as I much prefer the paddle shifters to the buttons on the standard and multi function wheel. I know it is possible to upgrade the wheel, and I found a post a while back that mentioned it should cost somewhere in the ballpark of $2000 to swap it out.

My question is, on the multi function wheel, since the extra functions are built into the wheel instead of the extra stalk behind the wheel, if I upgrade to the Sport wheel, do I need to add the extra stalk? I'm looking at Suncoast, and see several options on the Sport Design wheel, with heating/ without heating and with multifunction/ without multifunction. If you choose the option that your car has multifunction, the wheel costs more. Is this because the extra stalk is included? I just want to make sure if I buy a car without the Sport Design wheel, that I can upgrade it and still retain all the functionality (obviously it won't be on the wheel itself, and will be on a seperate stalk, but it does most of the same things and I don't want to lose that).

I'm being picky on a few options that are must haves for me, hence why I'm having trouble finding a car. I'm looking for the following options:
Sport Design steering wheel
Navigation
Bose
Heated and Ventilated seats
Power 14 way seats

I'm open to color options, except for black (too hot and too hard to clean), red (my car now is red and need a change) and yellow (only color I'm not much a fan of on Caymans personally). But I'm finding because the options I'm looking for lean toward the luxury side as opposed to the sporty side, most of the cars that have ventilation/bose/nav have the multifunction wheel. This car for instance ticks all my boxes except for the wheel, and if I can upgrade the wheel without losing out on any functionality for around $2000ish, then this solves the problem.

This is another that is close. It has the right wheel, and all the options I want, except it does not have seat ventilation. I'm in Texas so I'd really like to have it if possible, but my car now is on it's last legs and so I'd like to find something within a few weeks and if the wheel swap isn't feasable then I suppose I can live without it.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts or advice!

I ended up getting a car with the multifunction wheel (and I would miss the buttons on the Sport Design even though they aren't as useful as I'd imagined) that happened to have ventilation because it was too good a deal to pass up. And hit me at the right time. The ventilation is very effective and I don't think I'd want another without it :)

The shift buttons are much more substantial than I thought but do take some getting used to compared to paddles, but it can sometimes be convenient to be able to shift up or down with one hand. Just gotta get my right hand used to it.

I was hoping it was possible to swap in the new 718 wheel that has paddles and multifunction all in one, but I haven't seen any discussion yet.

Since you are getting PDK I would consider Sport Chrono as well, but I like gadgets.

I was at the dealer yesterday and had a chance to inspect the sport wheels on various models. The new Macan has the sport wheel with multifunction buttons on it, and the new 911 did too.The wheel is smaller than the sport wheel that came on the 981. I would like to get the new smaller one for my 981, just wondering if it will fit? I guess Suncoast would be a good place to start asking.

don't give up the seat ventilation, not sure why I ordered it but now love it and would not want to give it up. I ordered the sport wheel as I did not like how the multi function wheel looked ugly compared to the sport wheel, do not know about degree of difficulty of installing one of them. would check with your local dealer to see if they have done one...experience tells a lot in my mind ...good luck

Great question! If your car currently has the standard multifunction wheel and you want to switch to Sport Design wheel, you will also need the new steering column mounted stalk that will now control your multifunction settings. If your car does not have multifunction then the Sport Design wheel is a direct swap.

Dealer installation and activation is required, and we send your codes directly to them. You will receive the new wheel and stalk from us, make an appointment, and your coding will be ready for you at the dealer. Airbag is not included, just reuse your existing one.

If you have you any more questions let us know!

Thank you for the reply! I ended up finding a car last week. It just has the base wheel, so no multi function, so it sounds like it should be cheaper and easier to switch. I do still plan on upgrading to the Sport Design wheel, as I think it both looks better and I like the paddles much better, but after a week with the base wheel, the shift buttons aren't as bad as I thought based on my initial test drive and I think with a little more time I'll get used to them so it's now not quite a pressing issue. I'm enjoying the car too much for now! But the wheel change will definitely be the first upgrade I make.

Most of us are used to multi-function steering wheels, but I always hit buttons or knobs inadvertently when driving aggressively. I'm really glad there wasn't a multi-function sport wheel with paddles on my car. It's a delight to use and see the PD wheel. Wouldn't change it for a new one even for free, but that's just me. It's easy enough to reach console buttons to adjust or use anything. At least I have all luxury options, but it's a delight to me to keep some things 'old-school', including proper analog gauges w/needles (electronic, of course), not those ugly arcade screens like on new BMWs, MBs, etc.
