Rear view mirror problem? Really?

Here’s one I don’t think I’ve ever heard about: Today, leaving the house, the rear-view mirror was vibrating wildly. I checked, and the “connection” betwixt the plinth that the mirror is attached to, and the windshield, is really loose. Huh?

So, anyone have a good idea on how this is attached, and can I access that connection to see if I can effect a repair myself? (Half expecting the first response to be “you will need to replace the windshield”) If a broken clip or something, and there’s a good video and/or exploded view of the mirror assembly, that might get me int he correct direction.

So strange — the hard bits of this car, like the engine, suspension, etc., seem to me like they will last forever. But I keep having issues with small “non-critical” parts. The sun visor mounting clips (twice), the vanity mirror cover, the windshield washer hose, the interior door Panels, and now this. Well, I guess that would be preferable to failing transmissions and brake calipers, no?

It might be the first time (?) driven since I got the car back from the dealer (at ten year,s the car gave me a warning, coolant system, needed the cooling fan motor replaced); Did it get broken at the dealer? No idea. I probably haven’t touched the rear view mirror in years. BTW, I presume there are premium mirrors with auto dimming, cameras or maybe a DVD player. This one has apparently no electronics… it’s just a mirror.

Thanks. But my mirror's base does not look like that, the plinth is bigger and blockier, and I do not see any tabs to press with a pick. So I still do not know how to remove the cover and get at what's going on underneath.

Any chance the two slots in the photo in post #3 are somehow involved in removing the plastic cover over the mount?
