I have done a lot of thinking about it, and have decided that my 987.2 is a keeper. I see no reason to trade it in for anything Porsche currently makes, nor for a BMW or an Audi, as good as they may (or may not) be.

When I took the cover off the car this past spring, I just stood there and stared at it. My wife said, "Aren't you going to get in and start it up?" I stared blankly at the car, and she then paused, and said, "Oh, I get it. Sure is a great looking ride."

At one point during the first drive of the spring, I mashed the throttle. Wow! Just... freakin'... WOW! Thought to myself, "So THIS is why you bought this car." (Well, that and everything else that makes a Porsche sports car special.) Memories of the shrieking, wailing flat 6 will keep me warm through yet another long, cold winter. Can't wait for spring!
Now that was funny.

I go out to my Boxster S quite a bit during the winter months and sit in the car which is parked in our attached unheated garage. I usually go out with a glass of wine put the top down and listen to some good music. The wife pops out and sees me in the car and stares at me while shaking her head. She's puzzled says nothing and returns into the house. An hour or so later she comes back nto the garage now with my uncorked wine and pours me a glass. Haven't done that this year but may do so in the near future. Anyway I thought I was crazy but after reading this I don't think so.

Bought a very lightly used GT4 in Dec. With the idea of tracking it a fair amount. You don't say what your plans are in that regard. The stock seats are quite comfortable, but the car is VERY low for street driving and can easily scrape underneath as well as in front. It is one heck of a vehicle and can certainly be enjoyed on the roads as well as the track, although it is clearly designed for the latter. One thing to consider is that many if not most of the ones for sale now are minimally optioned "flippers" like mine. I am sure you know what the asking prices are for these cars, and that may not be a concern, but even so, simply finding the "must have" options might be a challenge. Good luck and enjoy, either way.

Thanks for your reply Cobby. The GT4 would be street driven 99% of the time. I live within 20 minutes of a track. The GT R would be driven near 100% on the street. I'm semi retired so I have a lot of time to travel. The GT4s are all around $150,000 CDN used while the GT Rs are new at $125,000 CDN. I won't be buying until spring 2018 so my search should be fun.

They want to sell a few cars to a niche market. Turbos are here to stay and should be.
I personally don't have a problem with turbos as I own 2 currently. I prefer the previous engine as do most posters. Decrease the engine size, raise the price and ruin the sound will turn away most previous buyers. Anyway enjoy your Monday.

I don't think the C8 is competition. I wouldn't consider one. It's like a Ford man switching to Chevrolet. It won't happen. I'd consider a 911 or a Panamera before I took that plunge.

Theres a new GT4 imminent - I would stay away from tracked GT4s, especially out of warranty - two many 3rd cog problems on tracked vehicles. (seen two myself going for the slow drive).
I wouldn't buy a car out of warranty especially one that will be over $100,000. I haven't heard anything about a new GT4. I would prefer a new one over a used one. Hopefully the new one will be less the wing.

Nice post Engnr. I agree with everything you said. Here in Canada pricing of these cars is through the roof. I'm in the market for a new car and would have bought a new Cayman S. With the negative comments posted about the exhaust I'm now looking elsewhere. The handful of cars I'm considering are the GT-R, Mustang Shelby GT350 as well as a 911. I would also look at low mileage Cayman GT4. It doesn't make sense to trade my 09 Boxster for a new 718. Anyway the hunt begins.

I have an 09 Boxster S and love it. I also have a 16 S3. If I bought a new Cayman and/or Boxster and it came with the engine of my Audi I would be very happy with it. Unfortunately for those of us with a flat 6 it will be hard to trade for the new 718. It's tough to have these problems.

Highscore, I don't need to cross the pond for higher petrol/gas prices. We are currently paying $1.25 per litre here in southern Ontario while our friends across the river in New York are paying half what we pay. Our prices are high because of the tax as are cigarettes and alcohol. I understand and agree with the cigarettes but we all need fuel. Anyway you can't fight the government.

"There are lots of posts of SUV haters. Many Many. But thats nots a Porsche thing. Thats a sports car thing."

I do not hate Sport Utility Vehicles. They have their "Utility". They are trucks used for "Utility" reasons. They are not sports cars, no matter what Porsche and other manufacturers want you to believe. And I know they have convinced many customers. An SUV, is what it is. No "hate".

I would be very happy if they tripled the price of gas, no trucks of any kind in the left lane of the highway, trucks limited to 45 mph right lane only. I'll stop writing as I could go on all night.

I have read all 91 pages and commented several times along the way. I am in the market for a new ride to replace my GTI. I intend on keeping my Boxster S and my S3. I can't see buying a 718. I'm down to 2 cars a new GTR or a lightly used GT4. The Nissan I could drive year round with a set of winter tires when required. I'd park the GT4 during the winter months. What should I do? Any suggestions?

I just don't think there are many Porsche buyers who are cross shopping Mustangs. A GT350 is an excellent car but it just doesn't have the panache of Porsche, and that is very important to many upscale buyers.
I am one who would get a GT350, however, I wouldn't get the GT350R. The Mustang to me is overpriced as is the new 718. We can't have it all. I'll take a 718 out and find out just how bad it sounds. I don't need Harris or anybody else to make my buying decision. Any new Ford I get at a very good discount due to family connections. Anyway.......

I checked the inventories of the 718 Boxsters at three dealers in my area. The prices for the base cars averaged mid to upper $60K (one was mid $70Ks) and the S mid $80Ks. The number of Boxsters ranged from 5 to 7 at each dealership. So there are 19 Boxsters within an hour drive of my house.
You have a lot of time on your hands to do that. I personally wouldn't have wasted my time doing that. Thanks anyway.

Thanks for the entertainment men/ladies. In the end after reading through this post you test drive a 718 before you buy one and then complain about it. Cheers.

I said I would never buy a Corvette, however, I would buy the current version. Would I buy a 718 based on this thread or my current 987? Yes, yes I would but it would simply take a test drive not a post of people who have never driven the car. Anyway...
