Seems most people here have plans or hopes of a 911 of some sort (S, GT2, GT3) in their future.

I'm not a Porsche guy. I just lust after mid-engined cars.
And for me a mid mounted flat six = the ultimate car.

Even if I could afford a GT3 or Mclaren or Enzo
I would be driving a Cayman. Perhaps multiple Caymans,
X51 autocross car, X51 street car, 2.7 traveling car, but no 911 for me.

Didn't you guys notice? The 911 engine is way back there by the rear bumper.

I'm very satisfied w/ my Cayman and prefer it in most respects to the 911, but I have to admit that I wouldn't kick a GT3 out of my garage.

Been there; done that. Many times over so the answer is no.

I was wondering when this old chestnut of a question would resurface. It must be on call-up somewhere. It as been aired so much and its originality has been lost so many times that it belongs on late night TV along with the monster movies.

I saved for 21 years to afford a Porsche and I believe that the Cayman S is the most bang for the buck. I got every performance option except ceramic brakes. I drove 911s, but when I drove th CS, it just felt right. The look, the sound, the frequency response - it is all there for me. I love my car. Now that I have tracked it, I of course want more and will upgrade it as I can afford to do so.

I agree with most of the above. Cayman is, for sure, the most P bang for the buck. But the 911 is what I originally fell in love with many years back so it will always occupy a very significant place in my heart. Before I pulled the trigger on the CS I was casually looking for a good 993 S coupe with low miles. Would love to own a 993 Sor 997 S some day but right now I'm very happy with the croc!

This subject may be old to some, but not to me! I hope folks here answer honestly about their aspirations. I never expected to own a Cayman S, much less a 911. I was advised to spend roughly the same amount of money on a slightly older 911. I drove a 911 before driving a CS. I also drove a Corvette before driving a CS. I felt a FAR better connection with the road in the CS than I did with either the 'vette or the 911. I felt the CS made me a better driver, whether it was true or not. I doubt I will ever take full advantage of all my CS has to offer, but I'm quite sure I will do "more" with it than I would a 911.

Do 911 owners ever wish they had a Cayman instead?....probably not. ;)

I'm a 986S owner and I've always dreamed of owning a 911. My dad had a red 930 Targa with the whale tale when I was a kid. I love the way my Boxster handles so I was torn between my next car being a Carrera or a Cayman

Two weekends ago I went to the local Pcar dealership to test drive each back to back. I will spare the long write up of the test drives but the end result was I liked the Cayman much better. Not only the mid-engine handling, but the feel, the sound, and honestly the looks.

Not only the mid-engine handling, but the feel, the sound,
Exactly. The flat six just inches from your right butt cheek.
The thought, the feel, the sound, just makes you feel so connected to the car.

When I drive a 911 the engine seems so far away.
And no matter how good it drives the thought of that weight way back there seems so wrong.

I have veery little experience with a 911. I would love to drive a 997 RS, but if I consider how much I drive the car, and the 40% taxes levied on the cars when they come in Puerto Rico, there is no way I can justify it. My kids would love a 911 so two can ride in the monkey seats, and my daughter in the front. I don't think so.

So I am left, and happy about it, with the Cayman S. The question is will it become a Cayman S turbo. I saw the TPC operation, and it seems like a quality operation. I went ahead and purchased their sway bars, and end links. Lets see how it changes my car.;)

Who knows maybe a turbo is in my future?

Poll is flawed.. I would love to have a green GT3 RS even though I love my CS.
You sound like choice A to me.

While I agree the green GT3 RS is about the coolest thing I've ever seen.
The engine is in the wrong place.:(

You take the GT3 RS engine, seats, abs, 305s
and put them in a Cayman and you have something so much better.

For me, the Cayman S is a stepping stone before a White 997 GT3.

Yes, I'd prefer the GT3 over the CS but don't really care for a 997S considering the cost and bang for buck.

I like having the best in its class. That's what the CS is in the Porsche coupe mid-engnie line up. I can't imagine having a 997 S when a the 997 GT3 is around the corner.

Had a 911...fulfilled my dream of owning an icon. Now that I have been there and done that...I moved on to owning a car that drives better...a midengined Porsche :) and saved myself $ at the same time! Now does that sounds strange to you guys?

when i went to brumos to look at porsches, i was set on buying a used 997. after driving a cayman S i knew it was for me. last year i drove the 997 again and felt the same way. i really prefer the intimate driving experience of my cayman S that i didn't feel in the 997. this comes from someone who has loved the 911 and what it has meant to porsche ever since i was 12 when my dad bought his first 911 sc in 1982 (god i wish i had that old car, it was casis red metallic).

I love the Cayman. I would like to have a 997 GT3 because it has the right ingredients, but I would prefer those ingredients arranged on a mid-engine Cayman platform. All things being equal regarding GT3 bits, I'd take the Cayman GT3 over the 997 GT3 hands down. Since there is no Cayman GT3 yet, mods will suffice. Fortunately there are aftermarket ingredients to make a screaming fast Cayman.

Actually I'd love to have a GT2 and a GT3 someday, while keeping my "Cayman Spyder" :D

I have owned and driven Porsche cars for over 40 years. Got a Cayman S when they first came out. Very nice and well balanced car. Traded it when I got the chance to get a 997 GT3 FANTASTIC vehicle, fast, nimble, super brakes and comfortable. Unfortunately it was bought back by Porsche last week as it was in for its fourth Rear Main seal in less than a year. Looked at and drove a new 997 Carrera S and while fast and comfortable it seamed soft and somewhat disconnected from the road (remember I was coming from a GT3) Also luggage and golf club space is limited so I optioned out a Cayman S and my dealer found exactly the car I wanted. I get it this weekend. The mid engine Cayman is a great car and the mid engine super. Reminds me of the older 911's before the engines got so large that the rear weight bias got out of balance. I will not track the Cayman as I also have a 1983 Euro spec 911 SC that is completely set up for the track and it runs and handles like a well trained Quarter horse. My wife drives a Cayanne GTS Retirement is fun and makes up for being older (in body not mind)

I got my Cayman because it was the first Porsche that I have found that reminds me of my old 911. I have had no regrets. The Cayman has not disappointed me in any way. That said, if the stars were aligned (I had the money and found the right car) I would be happy to own a 911.

I didn’t vote because I agree with ARCuhTEK and PistolPete13 – I’d really like to have a Cayman S and a GT3-RS (but mine would be orange). I definitely enjoy my Cayman, but a "911" has always been a dream car for me. So I'd want both! :D

I'm on the same boat, always admired the 911, but don't have any interest in trading in my CS for one, handling makes a car for me, and the CS more than delivers in that department. That said, I'd happily own a GT3 or GT3-RS (green for me) in addition to the Cayman were it to make sense financially, at present I don't think the wife would approve of making payments on 2 P-cars lol.

I had a 914 for 15 years. Loved driving around in a 2 seater mid-engine car. Of course at the time I really wanted a 911 but when one is first starting out that wasn't possible.

Wind ahead ...

I was saving for a nice sports car again, in the mean time driving fun but not particularly super cars. I still wanted a 911, but I didn't lust after it. Maye something about the shape? Or just it has reached a price point that left me feeling like I would be unhappy having spent that much. I was thinking about a Boxster but am not a big fan of rag tops. I prefer Coupes or maybe again the removable hard top like the 914 had.

Wind ahead ...

The Cayman S is released. I saw it in pictures and thought WOW. Then I actually saw it and thought ... that is a car I MUST have. All that I loved about the 911, in a Coupe, but also the Shape was much sexier to my eyes then the 911, and the price and power are perfect for a street driving vehicle. Having the fastest thing doesn't matter to me at all. Having something that makes my heart race when I drive it, when I look at it, does. It has beautiful lines, the 2 seater intimacy of the 914, the mid-engine goodness, and it is affordable (that being relative of course).

There are some other cars out there like the Lotus of course, but the Cayman is a superb sports car + daily driver + a bit of luxury + makes for a decent enough long trip cruiser on smooth roads. Exactly the combination I wanted.

And hey, having a car with the Porsche Emblem on the hood... a life long dream/lust fulfilled is a pleasant bonus ;)
