May I Please get a cloned SSD?

I am happy to pay, send the SSD you recommend and pay for shipping.

Please let me know if the offer is still standing.

I have a 2015 Carrera 4 GTS with XM, NAV, Chrono and what not. Will that be an issue?

thank you!!
I can’t tell you if it will work or not but if PCM3.1 it should. Send me a PM and we can work out the details.

Did you reset (handover) the PCM before cloning the drive? If not, you are just copying bad data to the new drive. I suggest doing a full reset ("handover") on the system first. If the original hard drive is really bad, it may not be possible.

I have an image of my drive that I can write to an SSD, if you need. The maps are coded to my VIN, so you will lose your navigation functionality. My car is a 2014 Panamera Turbo.
larry,
my harddrive has crashed. can’t clone it. any chance of getting a drive from you. please email me answer

If you wanted to replace the drive with an SSD, would there be any advantages to installing a larger drive than the original? I am thinking that after cloning the drive, you could use a partition utility to enlarge the partition containing the data.

I would think so, but I'm not skilled enough to be able to change the usable partition size.

I think there are hard numeric limits in the software such that a larger disk size doesn't really allow you to store more music. That said, I've not hit the limit in my Boxster. I have hit the limits in my wife's 2017 Cayenne (which has the newer PCM 4.x, that surprisingly allows for a significantly lower number of songs in the library). I'm pretty sure there is a lot more disk space available in that, but I haven't specifically looked.

Does the stock radio system allow for adding music or something to the internal drive? I didn't think it did, but if it does, then a larger drive might make sense... otherwise, what would you do with the extra space?

The factory PCM 3.1 with Bose definitely does.

From what I understand only the PCM3.1 during the2013 model year and later will have the jukebox which is displayed as an option when showing the media options. The CDR base radio does not have the jukebox which allows the storage of music on the hard drive. The earlier PCM3.1 also do not have the jukebox and have a smaller 40GB hard drive. The latter 2013 through 2016 PCM3.1 have the larger 100GB hard drive that allows 40GB for 5,000 songs to be loaded with a thumb drive thru the usb port in the glovebox. I have loaded over 3,000 songs in the jukebox and have them in folders and playlists so they are easy to find and can be displayed and searched by artist, album, genre or playlist on the multi function display or the PCM. For me it seems easier than streaming and more reliable in bad cell areas.

When I cloned my hard drive I used a 250GB SSD drive because it was cheap and available but I have not seen where anyone yet has been able to take advantage of the increased size for additional music storage.

Hello all. I am a 20 year owner of air cooled 911 (as well as 20 yr poster on RL). Bought a 2016 Cayenne 3 months ago with a PCM3.1. Everything was working great until I decided to install an ISUDAR android unit and upgrade to SSD at the same time. I cloned my drive using an offline bit-by-bit 2 bay Fideco dock from Amazon. Installed the SSD and ISUDAR board and that is when my problems started.

My PCM with FW 4.7.5 started rebooting. I was convinced it was ISUDAR so I removed it. Rebooting continued. Thought I had a faulty SSD so reinstalled the original OEM HDD. Rebooting stopped but now my maps are gone ("loading" is all that I get). I reset the PCM with the "handoff" method and maps still do not return.

Bought another brand of 240GB SSD. Cloned it with the same method as above and the rebooting came back on new SSD drive! Still no maps.

So now I am thinking that either my cloning method is bad or my orignal HDD has bad sectors that are transferring to the new drive? I dont know. Not sure why my maps crashed. I notice that when pulling the HDD, there is an amber LED that is lit on the board connecting the HDD. I suspect that unplugging the HDD while this LED is lit may be really bad. Problem is that if you open the door, the LED lights again. Can anyone confirm that its critical to pull the fuse for HDD swapping?

I will try the procedure outlined by @ledbette above and use clonezilla to build an image of 4.7.6 on my SSD. I hope it works. If it does, then the next step will be to figure out how to get my maps back.

Ultimately I want to go back to ISUDAR android car play board. I really like the maps and spotify integration. Appreciate the help of @ledbette @ELCID86 and the others for helping! I have not figured out how to PM users on Planet 9. Maybe I cannot since this is my first post and Im not a premium subscriber?

You have to have ~10 legitimate posts to be able to PM. Hope you sort it with the image. let me know if you need an SSD clone. Shawn.Faherty at gmail

Is it really one image for all PCM 3.1 systems? I have the Bose system with Sirius. I think the premium bose option gives you some optical connections and a subwoofer in the back. Perhaps its just hardware.

I am really looking forward to trying this and will let you know if i need a clone Shawn - really appreciate it. I was reading the threads on RL and there were many getting deep into rebuilding their own HDD. I had the [hopefully false] impression that PCM FW was tied to VIN. Seems like perhaps only the maps are tied to the VIN....

Hello all - still trying to build a new SSD with info above. My new drive is 500GB (original is 128GB). If you see my disk 1 below, I have ~372GB of unallocated space. Should I increase a partition to take advantage of the extra space or leave it? If I do increase a partition(s) which ones? The PCM looks to be 5 partitions!

Also, the PCM with new SSD is still showing FW v 4.75? I thought that the image burned to the HDD would have given me the 4.76? I did a handoff on the PCM and its still showing the 4.75. Is there a way to update FW with the HDD or does it assume that your FW is at 4.76?

I wouldn't increase the partitions. Doing so might mess up the partition map and refuse to boot. From what I have heard, "using" that extra space doesn't get you much anyway, so there's no real point?

If it works without changes, then run with that for now. If you get bored, you can certainly try expanding the space and seeing if it makes any difference.

Thanks @schwinn. I installed the SDD and left the partitions the same. Unfortunately, my PCM FW version 4.75 still reboots periodically. So far, only my original HDD installed will avoid random reboots. I guess seeing version 4.75 still on the PCM display indicates that I should take my Cayenne into dealer for FW reflash. I read somewhere that PCNA was recommending FW upgrade to 4.76 for reboot problems.

The whole point of me touching the drive was to avoid failure on my 8 year old HDD and be stuck with a non-functioning PCM. Ive made 2 copies using 2 separate ways (bit-by-bit clone of the original as well as rebuilding the ISO image outlined in this thread) with 2 different SSDs. The PCM works with either new SSD, just reboots.

Still learning. Wish I better understood the PCM system.

That's certainly odd behavior. Yeah, I agree, maybe letting the dealer update the original HDD and seeing that it solves the issue, then pulling and cloning that, would help. Good luck!

UPDATE: I removed the PCM from the Cayenne and burned another PCM V4.76 dvd USING ONLY 4X BURN SPEED. Inserted into the drive and viola! the PCM started reading the disk and performing the FW update. It took 20-30min and I was stressed that the PCM was going to reboot during FW upgrade but it did not. Update was performed and I got my maps back and my HDD was valid! I did the initial FW upgrade with the original HDD and decided to repeat the process with my SSD. To my surprise when I installed the SSD, the firmware was still at 4.76 and the SSD was valid!

Lesson learned - and YMMV - I would tell anyone with working HDD to upgrade the FW before installing SSD. I know many do it opposite out of necessity, but frankly Im not sure what happened with my SSD being invalid before 4.76 upgrade. Also what was interesting was that my PCM on the bench reverted to German but then came back to english once installed. Ill leave the vents out for now and check for reboots, but Im feeling pretty good for permanent fix. Thanks to all for the hard work and help in getting the PCM upgraded to SSD!

Hello all. I am sorry for all the non-replies to this thread over the years. Shortly after making this post I had a fairly catastrophic flood at my house that wiped out most of my equipment and totalled my original Cayman. I've been back in another Cayman for a while now, but never got around to replacing my equipment for cloning drives. It does look like several folks have picked up where I left off, so I thank the community for that, and for their patience.
