Rusty Discs........... Help!

I took delivery of my Cayman S on the 15th July - drove it for 5 days (Total 250 miles) and had to go away to California and Brazil for Business for 2 weeks.

I landed in the UK early this morning, got home to find my pride and joy covered in pollen and the discs with a covering of rust................ I recall a Mercedes I had that I did not drive for 6 weeks and the discs also rusted up - this caused a grinding noise and a 'wobble' when driving along, and a worse wobble when braking. I thought it would get better as the brakes smoothed with use, but in the end I had to get the discs and Pads changed.

1. What do I do to stop the discs from going rusty in the first place? (I work abroad for 2-3 weeks at a time so driving every day is not an option)

2. What do I do now? I don't want a 'wobble' and I certainly do not want to change the discs and pads!

Anybody know the answers to these 2 questions? Thanking you all in advance.

The discs are made of cast iron and when not used will get some rust on them, especially if you store or not drive the car right after you wash it. This happened all the time with the turbo I had before the Cayman, I'd wash it after a trip, then put it in the garage for a couple of weeks - all this is completely normal.

Take the car out for a spirited drive for an hour or so, and all the rust will be gone, and your brakes should function normally. The pads will be fine, too. They'll feel and sound strange at first, but after a bit, will be completely normal.

As said, quite normal. You might also experience the rotors stuck to the pads makingthe car harder to move.Just carefully give it a bit more throttle & they'll break loose. You may get some brake squeal & reduced braking efficiency until you wear off the rust from the rotors which shouldn't take but a few decent stops.

I get rust to if I wash it and don't drive it afterwards. Just spray it down with WD40 and no worries, just kidding!!!

Ha! Reminds me of this thread from a few years ago, except the original poster wasn't kidding:

The kid put armor all not only on his tire sidewalls, but all over the treads as well, and then wants to blame Bridgestone for 'defective tires' after he spins out and crashes...

brake disc as mentioned here, is made of cast iron (unless its ceramic!). It is prone to get some Oxidation on it. If you live in a area high in humidity or after a wash, one can see the deposit of rust/oxidation on it.

I never had a problem with'effectiveness of braking' due to oxidation

Also, I would suggest to avoid any sprays like the WD40 on it

omg that is sooo funny... u never know what stupid things people will do

anyways just drive the car and press the brakes, it'll scrape the rust right off. just dun do anything stupid like that armor all guy... btw i've seen someone repaint their rotors cuz of the rust. /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/wall.gif

Related to the Armor All on the tires, I know someone who put Armor All on the pedals in the car. Looked real nice. Then he had to hit the brakes in an emergency. Foot slid right off the pedal. Fortunately he was able to get back on them and stop. But he sure was shook.

It's the unthought of effects that can kill you.

wow, this guys really thinks there was something wrong with the tire huh?

I guess you can armor all just about anything, as long as it makes it look "hella sweet".....
ha/ha/ha/ha/ha

On the serious side, I'm really glad that folks here aren't like that. I'm not talking about mr. playa4life but everyone else. I don't think I've read so many curse words in a single thread before.

I think in response to the 2002 thread referenced above, the other guys responding to the armor all on the tread, should have said...

If you want to know if this is what caused your accident......take the AA to the bathroom with you.....lubricate the bottom of your feet really well..then step into the running shower.. THAT is the same thing your tires are experiencing!

Now ask yourself.....do you think that AA caused the wreck? LOL

Interesting thing to me in that particular thread is that even near the end he is STILL questioning "IF" the AA had anything to do with it....

baaaahahahahahahahah

I have said many time in this forum I am really a novice when it comes to cars and such. I now feel like I have advanced to one step above, just due to this guys existence. :D
