Tires shot at 7500 miles, is this normal?

The car I have on hold has 7500 miles. However, the rears are almost down to the wear indicators. Is this normal for a Cayman? Does this suggest the car has been driven hard or tracked? TY

It depends on a whole range of conditions but from personal experience I would expect 12-18K out of a set of rears depending on brand. However it is possible to make them last much less even without hitting the track.

If this is a dealer then I would expect him to replace these if like you say they are down to the wear indicators. Also ask him to print out the DME data for you and look for over revs in the 4-6 ranges.

Even if you're getting a good deal on this car, I would highly recommend a pre-purchase inspection by either a dealer or good independent local Porsche specialty shop. There are a lot of "wear" items like clutch, brake pads/rotors (and yes, the tires) that could cost you a considerable amount of money if they need replacing on the first day you own the car.

NOT normal. There is a reason. Either alignment is off, or the tires have been subjected to some abuse, hard acceleration, etc... How are the fronts. I took my Cayman to the track few times, and after 8,000 miles the rears were still fine.

My rears are on track to last about 12k-13k miles. IMO the car has been a bit abused if the rears are shot @ 7.5k. What brand & size?? It is common for the fronts to last about twice as long as the rears.

Something is going on here.

If the whole rear tire is worn down, they must have been spinning the tires a lot. (In my experience, track use will wear out the shoulders and leave the center of the tire looking fine with stock alignment.) I can't speak to AX wear.

But I will be in 09. It is a New Year's Resolution. ;)
