But let me back up a bit. On June 11th we were enjoying another fun Chin Motorsports track day at Sebring when, at the end of the day, the motor blew. A rod broke loose and punched a 3"x4" hole in the top of the core...ouch!

After some research, I decided not only was I going to keep the car but upgrade to a 3.8L instead of replacing the stock 3.4L. The guys at Reeves are going to put RS badges on it...The Cayman RS is born.

Can anyone share any recent personal experiences with this mod? Thanks!

Sorry to hear of your misfortune, but sounds like a very exciting solution.

IIRC, Itmerc was perhaps the first to do an X51 swap (among other things): http://www.planet-9.com/cayman-boxs...odifications/20940-x51-motor-swap-supercharger-install-widebody-conversion.html

More recently, teoh2005 did a swap as well: http://www.planet-9.com/cayman-boxs...boxster-modifications/52868-3-8-x51-swap-pccb-master-cylinder-3rd-radiator.html

If you don't get response from those experienced in this swap, you might want to contact him for advice . . .

I appreciate the plug but we haven't tried this ourselves with the EFI motors, just the DFI motors. We did however have Guy Cosmo's TPC turbo X51 motor 2007 Cayman S in the shop for a bit as I was attempting to data log the car and help the guys at TPC get some additional highway information about mixtures, etc. So i got to run that thing up and down I-95 at a good clip. I also drove this car around Homestead Miami Speedway and Palm Beach International Raceway. Oh yeah, Roebling Road too but don't tell the owner!

More to report from the DFI engine swap project as we get further down the road.

Wow, that is going to be $$$!!!

Keep us updated as it goes along.

The 3.8L has been delivered and the car might be done by the weeks end. Will keep the updates coming. May also be putting in a performance clutch as well. The original is on it's last leg. BTW, Reeves Porsche service is doing all the work.

The 3.8L upgrade should be done by Tuesday of next week. We decided to upgrade the clutch to a Spec Stage 2+. Almost there...can't wait to report back! :burnout:

There was a delay in getting the clutch which pushed things back several days. The bulk of the work was completed last Friday afternoon and Tom from Reeves emailed me a video clip of my car with the new engine in and running! Needless to say I was stoked! The car should be ready tomorrow. I will be reporting back this week after I get some windshield time with her.

Well, I picked her up today and WOW! The expected torque difference is verrrry noticeable, especially in the 3,000-5,500 RPM range. Also, the 3.8L produces a much meaner sounding note through the Fabspeed exhaust. I like the Spec clutch but it feels like a slight break-in period will be taking place.

Can't wait for the next track day...Sebring August 20th. That will be her official coming out party and the true test of this upgrade!

Keeping an eye on this as well. Congrats.

It shouldn't take more than a couple of days to swap in a 3.8 if you know what you are doing. The hangup points are:

1) Motor mounts - need to change those out to accomodate the taller motor to get it to sit in the car properly.

2) ECU tuning - you can't just flash to a 3.8 flash (probably what the dealer is doing btw) and get the best performance because you still need other things in the car like PSM, etc. to know that it is a Cayman not a 911 and if you simply flash over the Cayman software with 911 3.8 software you will lose some of that and have a less than ideal car. At least one aftermarket ECU tuner has figured this out.

Very nice.. really wish I can get to see this in person. Alas, I'll be at Sebring on Aug 6th with ERME instead. Enjoy!

Cool.

I would think a conversion kit might be of interest for those who dont want to be a science experiement with ones local workshop. Failing that, an install article would be nice.

Looking forward to hearing all about your Mid mount 911 ;) .

Softronic used to just list conversion software on their website. Now they show a complete conversion kit. I would be very interested in the details of that kit. Maybe someday when a conversion is more than a pipe dream I will call them.

Maybe I missed something, but how are you solving the transmission exchange problem?

I'm not sure I understand your question. They did not mess with my gearbox at all but I did have them drop in a Spec Stage 2+ because my original clutch was somewhat of a weak link.

This is exciting news especially for all of us who always wanted to know what this car could do with equal 911 displacement. Did you mention if this motor was brand new or was it coming from an older chassis?
