Once again, OT discussion has gone astray and OT deleted. In post 1438 I closed the thread because: The purpose of this website is to help others. ... I no longer see any reason for this thread to continue as its not clear its "helping" anyone. The initial reviews, good and bad, exist. Decide for yourselves what you think. Don't allow the opinions of others sway you. ... The thread was about auto journalists observations and has always been about their observations. My motives should have been clear to anyone in closing it. While it did keep negative posts out of other 718 threads, I felt it was depressing potential 718 owners and was getting old.

In post 1439, Kman reopened it and his direction was clear. I re-opened this topic thread ... This topic should remain focused on automotive journalistic reviews of the 718 AND what our members think of these reviews (agree or disagree with them). ... For example, I think it would be interesting to know whether or not Porsche has ramped up its positive spin on the 718 platform after some initial reviews weren't glowing. That is his prerogative. Instead of continuing on looking at the less than glowing reviews, some prefer to focus on process or assumed agendas that do not exist, rather than the reviews. Stay OT. The thread is about automotive journalistic reviews of the 718 AND what our members think of these reviews (agree or disagree with them).

NEWS FLASH:

1443 posts and we now can agree that some people don't like the 718 sound.

If this is new news to you, you're welcome.

Question: Should we start another thread entitled "Best 718 Reviews" or simply move this "worst" thread to where it belongs, to the 98x Board so that those with the older cars can continue their haranguing.

I am beginning to wonder whether this thread is deliberately trying to troll 718 owners away from the Planet-9 site.

I don't know if this thread should be moved to the 981 section or if there should be a new thread in there for non-718 owners only. I mean there is a thread for 718 owners only, so why not the inverse? It would be nice if we 981 owners could talk about what we want without 718 owners trying to convince us the 718 is superior to the 981 for the all the reasons I didn't buy a Vette. I'd change "some people" to "most people" in your post, and of course don't forget the 4 cylinder issue. Other than that you've got it covered.

I agree that most people who have voiced an opinion on P9 (there may be significant numbers in the "pro" camp who are reluctant to wade into the"debate") are not happy with the 4-pot or the sound. Non Porsche-owning car enthusiasts in my circle (AMG, Viper, Nissan GTR/Z, Miata) aren't as opposed, with their views ranging from "it's OK" to REALLY liking it...a current 2017 Z and a 2017 Miata owner (both avid auto-crossers) have both said they're looking at a base 718 as their next ride. These two have both seen the reviews (we've talked at length about them) and don't see sounding like an STI as a negative.

Motor Week tested a 718 Cayman S (PDK) and measured 0-60 at 3.8 seconds and 1/4 mile in 12.2 seconds at 116 mph. They said both times were about one-half second quicker than the GT4 they tested!

If I could pick one car to add to my collection today it would be a GT4. As they don't make this car anymore I'll either have to buy a used one or a 718 Cayman S. Nice to have my problem.

This entire thread should be deleted. I own a 981 and am very happy with it. I am going to purchase a 2018 718C and I am certain I will be happy with it.

I just do not understand all the negativity, especially among "brothers and sisters" of the marque. I do not like the 911 or the Corvette and would never purchase one. But I would never go their forums and trash what are indeed excellent cars just because those are not for me!

Sheesh! Enough is enough. Let's move beyond the junior high playground.

My thoughts on Porsche's play to downsize the engine displacement.

Short answer. Brilliant move.

Now let me explain...

Being blessed to pick between 718s and 981 GTS I decided to go with the GTS.
The choice was easy for me. GTS was the rare breed in Thailand because it costs 400k USD.
Only three were sold through official dealers here.

I got the car 6 (6 months old 3000km) for half the price.
Great deal I know. But how?
That is because the 718 with the new 4 cylinders displacement enters the lower tax bracket for import.
Now suddenly the Cayman/Boxter is in the same tier with M2 and C45 at around 200K USD.
With the new pricing structure I was able to bargain a great deal for my GTS.

In many Asian countries, the new displacement will be very beneficial and attractive to the buyers.
Imagine 981 sells twice as expensive as BMW M2 or AMG C45.
Well you won't even think about it. No wonder only 3 GTS were sold.
Now with the new engine 718 is a lot more affordable.

The 718 will sell. Especially outside USA.
718 is the Porsche's new lineup to battle competitors in other countries with high import tax.
The Cayenne hybrid is already a success in many other countries. EV tax bracket is big reasons to why.

This is a great move from Porsche.

Be careful what you wish for. Before this thread collected all the negativity, every thread was full of negative posts. I find the 718 forum much more useful now that the complaints are (mostly) concentrated in one easily avoided thread.

Besides, critical or negative reviews can be informative and useful, even to those of us who like the 718. So I am glad the latest review was posted, even if it's only somewhat glowing...

Now having test drive 718s and owning 981.

I will chime in my 0.02 on the 718s.

Performance
Like many magazine reviews, the overall drive and handle is improved on the 718.
The handling is definitely on par if not better than 981 (I have x73).
Acceleration is awesome. The power comes up earlier than the 981 and honestly the lag is minimal.
I would not compare the lag to the ones on those turboed Subaru. That's really not comparable.

Interior & Exterior
Well this really isn't a set up or down. It really depends on the options selected but I prefer the GTS with the alcantara.
I don't like too much buttons on my steering wheel. So I would give this one to the 981.
I love the new lights on the 718. Very modern and I believe they will look even better when the new OLED housing comes along.

Overall I love the 718. I think Porsche did a good job upgrading the bits and pieces.

As for the 4 cylinder displacement and the sound.
Is it that bad? Lol honestly this is really subjective.
I personally don't like it.
I like the higher pitched reving character sounding Porsche like the ones in the GT3. And 981 is a bit closer in that regards.

However, I wish some aftermarket tuners can tune to the sound so it's music to my ears.
If a Ducati 2 bangers can do it I don't see why the 4s can't do it.

As my previous post says. The new displacement is a brilliant move.
Not only it lowers the price of the car in many countries.
It also create a new platform for the upcoming hybrids intergration.
4 banger turbo 370hp + 130hp electric motor.
The possibility is endless. There is nothing wrong with the 4s.

The only thing Porsche did wrong, or if they ever did.
They didn't made the car sound right to the popular demands.
Now some tuner can solve this problem with a full header + muffler setup and we can all get over with this debate.

I had suggested to both the moderator and the founder of this site that they take the EVO review and just add it to the "assemble 718 reviews here" thread. It's just another review, albeit quite dramatic. I think that the negativity towards the 718 peaked months ago and as more actual owners started posting overwhelming positive reviews (in addition to journalist reviews that have become increasingly more positive) the swell of negativity in the posts has subsided. Bottom line: I think this "worst..." thread has run its course, should be eliminated, and the EVO reviews should just be part of the review assemblage.

I just thought some people would be interested in the update of the EVO review. Why all the concern about this post if we stick to the topic? There are plenty of other posts to make you feel good about your point of view if you don't like the information posted here.

You do realize that you are not compelled to read every thread, don't you? If you don't like a thread, ignore it and it will die, assuming of course that others share your perspective.

Really? Seriously? I am not compelled to read all of the posts? I thought as a 981 owner and a future 718 owner I was indeed compelled to read every post in both discussion groups. Thank you for enlightening me...
